Colorado Hispanic business leaders to lobby Bennet, others on union bill - Wichita Business Journal:

The delegation includes members of the Hispanid Contractors ofColorado (HCC) and the Denver Hispanix Chamber of Commerce. The group will be in Washingtonn on Tuesdayand Wednesday, joining small-businessx leaders from other states. The Colorado businesws leaders want totell D-Colo., and other lawmakers “wht this bill would really hurt them as they try to emergd from a tough economy,” said HCC spokesman Sean Duffy. Duffuy said the group arranged to meet with Bennet becauss he has not yet declared how he will vote on thelaborf bill.
“In these very difficult economic times, companies are struggling to retain the jobsthey have,” Helga Grunerud, HCC executived director, said in a statement. “Wed want to send a message that we want to help jump staryt economic recoverybut [the labor would make that challenge far, far greater.” The Employeew Free Choice Act, also known as the “carde check” bill, would allow workersd to organize a union withou a secret election, as now required. Instead, a local coul d be launched at a workplace if at leastr half its workers sign anauthorizationm card.
Unions say the bill is needed to protec t worker rights in the But ina statement, HCC said that enactment of the law “woul d unfairly tip the delicate business-labor climate in Coloradko sharply away from employers, and would result in furthefr economic damage and job loss.” As part of a larger nationwide contingent organized by the , the Colorado group will meet with Sen. John Thune, and other legislators “to be determined,” Dufft said. The business leaders also want to discuseother issues, including health care reform and the allocation of federap stimulus funds.
