Chandler-based Space Data announced the plan Monday to offer up a portionm of the wireless spectrum it owns to be used in conjunctiom with equipment fromMenlo Park, Calif.-basede Full Spectrum. The two companies say the deal will allowe utilities to ownprivate wide-area networks to provide commandws to smart grids. “The combination of our high-powered frequencies with state-of-the-art WiMax technologyt provide utilities with a dedicated privatr broadbandwireless system,” said Jerry Knoblach, CEO of Spacr Data. For several years, Space Data has been developing a systen of wireless communications using weather balloonse to carryequipment aloft, providing a wide area of coverage.
The companu also has been providing communications for several years in theutilitty sector. Smart grids are the latesty application of technology inthe nation’s power They will transform the national powe r grid into one that is more flexible, allowinfg it to deliver more power to areas of the countryu that need it. The two companiesd believe their product would allow grid operators to control distributionn remotely through awireless network. “In terms of grid automation, much of the focu to date has been directerd toward automatic meter readinygand control.
However, real-time command and control of higher-levelo grid devices are of equal, if not importance in the drive for overallgrid efficiency,” said Stewartt Kantor, CEO of Full Spectrum.
