Forty percent of them plan to reducer amounts allottedto raises. Sixty-twp percent said bonuses will be smallerthis year. Twenty-five percenr are planning a hiring freeze. Another 25 percentr are planning onincreasing employees’ contributions to health Pay raises are being cut. So will severance packages. Why? It’s the economy! And everyone’ws accepting these huge reductions. Every day, we’rew expecting to hear about more companies reducingtheirf expenses. Employees seem to be takingg the cutsin stride.
They’re just happy to have a job. Why? It’d the economy! You know what? Recessionse can be a penny pincher’s Now’s the best time to get rid of the That guy in shippingwho can’t seem to remembere how to load a skid properlg twice in a row? The accounting assistant who seems really busy but you can neve really quite figure out what she’s doinh all day? History. The sales guy who spendas more time hitting on your receptionist than theactual phones? See ya. Runnin a business is tough when you have to be thebad guy. Many of us acceptr mediocrity becausewe don’t have the energy left to fight or fire But suddenly, the best excuse The economy!
It’s not just about changing the deadweighty employees. You can call your key suppliersx and beg for a cost You can call your phone companyu and beg for a littlr help with yourmonthly fees. Everything’s negotiabld because everyone’s skittish. No one wants to lose the busineses over a few bucks a But a few bucks savec a month from a bunch of different places adds up to more inthe Why? It’s the economy! Penny pinchers must get rid of underperforminf people. Renegotiate contracts. Beg for price reductions. Lock in lowef monthly payments. Plead poverty. Scream for Why? It’s the economy! Because in a few months the opportunityh will havepassed us.
Things will turn around. Prices will Unemployment will fall. The sun will shine. And we won’tf have the economy to blame anymore. Rats.
